Suburban Geometry
The geometry of landscape has always fascinated me. I’m interested in how we shape our environment, dividing it up with walls, fences, roads and paths.
I particularly love the conglomerate structure of suburbia – styles, materials and colours fashionable in different periods sit side by side. Layers of paint accumulate and then wear away to reveal those beneath. Individual property owners define their territories with stark boundaries or bold colours. On the other hand, recurrent forms and repeated patterns suggest the security of common tastes. Greenery features prominently – unpredictable plants and trees are sometimes generously accommodated, sometimes tightly controlled.
